Zion Nature Center’s February programs now available

FEBRUARY 2 AMERICAN KESTRALS

Saturday  1 p.m.

(All Ages) See a live American Kestral,  North America’s smallest Falcon,  and learn why populations are declining.  The Indiana Audubon Society is promoting a conservation initiative called “The American Kestral Partnership” which promotes conservation of American Kestral habitat and populations through citizen science. Monitoring American Kestral nest boxes is easy, and can be a fun and interesting family outdoor activity.  Program location is Zionsville Town Hall at 1100 W. Oak St.   Program is free and generously sponsored by the Friends of Zion Nature Center www.ZionNatureCenterFriends.org.

FEBRUARY 7 WILDLIFE OUTSIDE YOUR WINDOWS

Thursday  6:30 p.m.

(Ages 15 and up)  Learn how to create an eco-friendly habitat that will attract beautiful songbirds, insects, amphibians, and other interesting wildlife for viewing from your very own window.  During the program you can start paperwork to certify your yard as a Backyard Habitat with the National Wildlife Federation. Your certified habitat can become part of Zionsville’s special designation from the National Wildlife Federation as the 2nd certified Community Wildlife Habitat in the nation.  Your yard can become part of the solution in providing interconnected habitats which allow the creatures we share our yards with to travel in search of food, water, and mates.  Program is free but Space Is Limited/Registration Is Required [email protected] or 317-873-8950.

 

FEBRUARY 10 COYOTES

Sunday  2 p.m.

(Ages 6 & up)    Join us for an interactive family friendly program with Indiana Coyote Rescue Center.  Learn about coyote facts, behavior, and management as well as similarities/differences with other wild/domestic canids.  Learn how to co-exist with this important predator and dispel fears and common misconceptions.  Program is free but Space Is Limited/ Registration Is Required [email protected] or 317-873-8950.

 

FEBRUARY 15 ANIMAL ADVENTURES: ANIMAL FOOD

Friday   10-11 a.m.

(Ages 3-6)  Meet at the library for a fictional story then walk to the Zion Nature Center to learn real facts about animals and the food that they eat.  Free.  Weekday parking is not allowed at the nature center.  Register at 873-3149 Ext. 11600 or www.zionsville.lib.in.us.  Free.

FEBRUARY 16 UTOPIA WILDLIFE

Saturday   1 p.m.

(All Ages)  Join us for a fun and educational program while seeing some of Indiana’s wildlife up close and personal!  UTOPIA Wildlife Rehabilitators will introduce us to several injured animals that can’t be released back into the wild.  Program location is Zionsville Town Hall at 1100 W. FEBRUARY 23 BACKYARD TREE TAPPING & MAPLE SUGARING

Saturday  1 p.m.

(Ages 7 & up) Indiana was the leading maple syrup producing state in the country in 1916 and still produces top quality syrup today!  Learn how to make maple syrup from your own backyard and even sample some local syrup!  Dress for the weather because we will be outside for a hands-on demonstration of tree tapping, maple tree identification & more. FEBRUARY 26 RAISING BACKYARD CHICKENS

Tuesday   6:30 p.m.

(Ages 15 and up) Master Gardener Jane Deidrich will show how keeping a small flock of chickens is a great way to recycle food scraps while improving your garden and your diet!  Learn the basics and get answers to your questions.  Program is free but Space Is Limited/ Registration Is Required [email protected] or 317-873-8950.
