Raising safety issue awareness

Editor,

I enjoyed reading your opinion commentary about public participation. You concluded your piece with a question: “So, what is it you care about?”

I would like to take a moment to answer that in the hopes you will help me raise awareness about a safety issue near my house on Cherry Tree Road, south of 146th Street. Going south on Cherry Tree Road toward Cherry Tree Boulevard, there are sidewalks much of the way, except for where the sidewalk ends and takes up again on the other side of a creek. The lack of a pedestrian bridge here results in people of all ages risking it across the bridge alongside cars, most of which travel above the posted speed limit. As we aim to make Carmel friendlier to active lifestyles, I hope we can look at areas like this that would be well served with connecting sidewalks and pedestrian bridges. A lot of new homes have just been built here, and more are coming.

Additionally, it would be nice to see the partly started sidewalk finished on Cherry Tree Road between 146th Street and Cherry Tree Boulevard. The heavily wooded road dips down and curves and makes walking there alongside cars dangerous.

Along the same lines, there is no pedestrian light to cross 146th Street from Cherry Tree Road, so for those of us that want to walk up to the Kroger or Dillon Park, we are playing chicken with cars there as well.

Thanks for asking,

Kathy McCormick
