JANUARY 13 BOX TURTLES: “A LONG WINTERS NAP”
Sunday 2 p.m.
(All ages) Learn some interesting facts about hibernation and box turtles. Meet some of these sleepy reptiles as we check on them during hibernation. Free.
JANUARY 18 ANIMAL ADVENTURES: OWLS
Friday 10-11 a.m.
(Ages 3-6) Meet at the library for a fictional story then walk to the Zion Nature Center to learn real facts about owls. Free. Weekday parking is not allowed at the nature center. Register at 873-3149 Ext. 11600 or www.zionsville.lib.in.us. Free.
JANUARY 19 LIVE BIRDS OF PREY
Saturday 1 p.m.
(Best for Ages 6 and up) The Zion Nature Center will host Mark Booth of Take Flight Wildlife Education and his magnificent birds of prey. See what it’s like to be hawk-eyed or falcon-fast by getting a close-up look at these predators. This free program is generously sponsored by the Friends of Zion Nature Center and will take place at Zionsville Town Hall at 1100 W. Oak St.
JANUARY 24 CUB SCOUT WORKSHOP: NATURALIST BADGE
Thursday 6:30-7:30 p.m.
(Cub Scouts) Visit the Zion Nature Center to fulfill five requirements needed to obtain the Webelos Naturalist badge. Scouts will learn about bird identification, bird flyways, poisonous plants, venomous reptiles, and other wild animals. Space is limited and registration is required by contacting 317-873-8950 or [email protected]. Scouts must be accompanied by an adult. Free.
JANUARY 26 WONDERFUL WORLD OF BIRDS!
Saturday 2 p.m.
(Ages 7-adult) Join Rob Ripma for an exciting program about the wonderful world of birds. In addition to exploring backyard birds, we will work on how to identify the common birds of Indiana. In order to really study birds up close, it is important to know how to use binoculars. We will work on basic binocular skills and then, if weather permits, we will put our new skills to the test with a bird walk near the nature center! Free.
JANUARY 27 HIKING IN A WINTER WONDERLAND!
Sunday 2 p.m.
(All Ages) There is nothing more exhilarating than a hike through the woods on a crisp winter day! While the forests are dormant, you can really appreciate the hills, valleys, and streams that form a beautiful natural landscape. In addition, leaf bare trees make it easier to spot wild animals. Join us for this guided winter hike and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate back at the center. The program is free and sponsored by the Friends of Zion Nature Center.
