Barrington residents reflect on New Years

The New Year is here, bringing with it the rejuvenating thoughts of making fresh goals, new commitments, resolutions and promises to oneself for a better year.

For some, it is a different experience, just as meaningful though. On the occasion of New Year’s celebrations, the Current talks to future residents of the Barrington, a retirement community opening in Carmel this year. We asked them about their favorite New Year’s resolutions and their fond memories of New Year’s celebrations. This is what they had to say:

Norbert “Bert” Talbott

Best New Year’s Resolution: “Back in the 80s, I once made a resolution to learn how to fly a plane, and I eventually did learn during that year. It was fantastic!

“My resolution for this year is to get rid of all the extra stuff I have accumulated over my lifetime, so that I could move into the Barrington this fall without extra luggage. I am already working on it. There sure are a lot of things to get rid of!”

Favorite New Year’s Celebration: “In 1982, I learned how to do the Charleston (a dance from the 1920s) from my dance instructor. I then went downtown to the Athenaeum with my family where there was a Charleston contest. I won the contest and a bottle of Champagne! This New Year’s Eve, I will be playing in a band. I play the drums so that should be a lot of fun.”

Best New Year’s Resolution: “Oh my goodness, that’s a tough one. You’re evoking memories of my 86 years! That is pretty hard to go by. Well, I always wish for good health for my family and peace in the world; those are the two main wishes I always have. Usually, my resolutions revolve around my family. The world is kind of crazy now, so I pray for a better future, and happiness and good health for everyone.”

Favorite New Year’s Celebration: “One of my most pleasant memories was when I went down to French Lake with my family and spent a weekend there. It was a wonderful family outing; we did some fishing there and went on a boat ride. We made lunch there with the fish we caught so that was fun!”

Rodney Sorkin

Best New Year’s Resolution: “Most of my resolutions in the past have been about losing weight and exercising. One of my favorite resolutions was when I promised myself to quit smoking, and I actually did quit that year. I am a non-smoker now and am very proud of that.”

Favorite New Year’s Celebration: “My most vivid memory of a New Year’s celebration was when I went out with my wife to a wonderful party. This was back in 1985. It was that night that I realized how much I love my wife. It was a very memorable night.”
