Pay dirt or dirt pay?

It is our position that there is a disparity in the salary of the governor of the state of Indiana and Presidents of state run universities that deserves to be examined. As governor of the state of Indiana, Mitch Daniels earned a salary of $95,000 a year. His new role as president of Purdue University is expected to garner a salary of at least five times as much as he was paid to run the 15th most populous state out of 50 in the United States of America.

Yet, it’s not a job in public servancy or academics that garners the top pay spot for the state of Indiana. Hoosiers love their basketball, and they are willing to pay for it as Indiana University basketball coach Tom Crean garners the top spot as the highest paid public employee of the state with a salary and fringe benefits package totaling $2.3 million.

While state government and state universities have very different revenue streams on which to base their budgets, the question becomes who is paid too little, who is paid too much, and are the salaries appropriate for the level of responsibility?
