Carissa Drake, a 2011 Westfield High School graduate, recently won an Indiana Broadcasters Association scholarship.

This year, IBA selected 16 scholarship winners from 147 applications. Six high school seniors were awarded $500 each and 10 college students, including Drake, will each receive $2,700 for a grand total of $30,000. The IBA Board of Directors agreed to match donations from Indiana radio/TV stations this year, doubling the amount awarded in previous years.

Drake is currently a sophomore studying audio/video/cinema production at Anderson University. Her interest in communication started in high school and took off from there.

“I participated in Video Club for two years and took six classes in communication and video production,” said Drake. “I was a part of the WHS Video Announcements, where I executed roles such as technical director, camera operator, audio director and graphics director. As a reporter, I also created news stories that ran every Friday and are posted on the school’s Web site.”

After receiving her first camera as a Christmas gift, Drake was able to shoot and edit videos for her church and youth group. Since 2008, Drake has worked as a freelance editor and has edited videos for the Westfield Fire Dept., Church at the Crossing and several other families and couples.

“I plan, coordinate and oversee the filming of weddings, music videos, church events, informational videos and other types of content for clients,” she said. “I also cut together footage and photographs that have already been filmed and taken.”

Her mentorship at Innovative in Indianapolis confirmed her love for the industry and the city itself. This summer, Drake will be traveling with a group from her church to a small village in Africa to document the work they’re doing there. In the future, she hopes to pursue a career in video editing.

To be eligible for an IBA scholarship, students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0, be a resident of Indiana, actively participate in a broadcast facility and/or have worked for or interned at a commercial broadcast facility and received credit in a telecommunications, electronic media or broadcast journalism program.
