CIC COM RunnerI’m running the Carmel: Half Marathon

Number of years as a Carmel resident: Three. I am an Austrian citizen and I immigrated in March 2009.

Goal for the 2012 Carmel Marathon Championship Weekend: I hope to finish the Carmel Half Marathon in a little less than 2 hours. My personal best is 2:02:53 (2010).

Why I started running: I was overweight (185 pounds) had a heart attack in November 2004. Running became the best cardio training. Now, at age 63 and 140 pounds, I am in better health than I was 10 years ago.

Favorite place to run in Carmel: Monon Greenway.

I run with: I join the trainings group on Saturdays, but most times I am my own because I am slower than other runners. I adjust my running tempo with my base heart rate.

When I’m not running: I enjoy other fitness training at the Monon Center, reading, cooking, wine tasting, traveling, being a member of the Indianapolis Scientech Club, theater, concerts (classic, folk), meetings or parties and having discussions with friends.

One word to describe what running means to me: Freedom.

How running/exercise has changed my life: I am in much better shape than years before.

Race day lucky charm: None. I do not believe in bad luck.

Advice for new runners: Take your time and don’t increase your mileage too fast. Get advice about running techniques (at Runners Forum, for example). Good running shoes are also important, the right clothing and don’t get dehydrated.

Why I decided to run a race: If you have signed up for a race, you train and run more than (you do) without a goal. Since I am now a citizen of Carmel, I wanted to do my first marathon in this town. I finished! And I did another marathon last year, two 5 Ks and one 5-mile (run). I trained and ran more than 1,000 miles last year.
