Grade: Fourth

Art title: “Learning about Batik”

Art materials: Paraffin, crayon wax and fabric dye on cotton

Art teacher:  Beth Siminski

Artist’s statement:“I like seahorses and this seahorse wasn’t too easy to draw and it wasn’t too hard. I did think it was hard to draw on fabric because I liked my drawing on paper more than my fabric drawing. I love Batik and I loved my results!”

Second and Third Place Flag Contest Winners

Second Place – Lyndsay Jones, Monon Trail Elementary, Fourth Grade, Shannon Simmermon

What were you thinking when you designed your flag?

I was thinking about how the colors would look together and the size I would make things that are Indiana symbols, like the cardinal, tulip tree and peonies.

Why do you like art?

It’s a way to express myself and helps me look at the world in different ways.

How do you feel placing second place?

What an honor! I was so excited when Miss Simmermon told me I placed second. I just couldn’t believe it.

What’s your favorite part on your flag?

The cardinal is my favorite part. Usually when I make birds, they don’t turn out the way I thought they would look, but this bird did.

What excites/excited you the most about your win?

I am excited my name will be in the school newsletter.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I usually read, but if I find some paper and a pen, I will draw.

What’s your favorite class and why?

Reading because books get interesting and then I can’t stop reading them.

What’s your favorite color?

Purple

Third Place – Hannah Corson, Washington Woods Elementary, Fourth Grade, Beverly Staub

How did you feel when you got the call you won third place?

I was very surprised I won third place.

What’s your favorite part on your flag?

My favorite part on my flag is the bottles of blue and pink paint.

Why did you want to participate in drawing a flag?

I wanted to participate to see what place I would get if I tried.

What were you thinking when you designed your flag?

I was thinking about how children all over the world love art.

Why do you like art?

I like art because I like learning about different artists.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I like to draw, color and create.

What’s your favorite class and why?

My favorite class is science because we get to do experiments.

What’s your favorite color?

Light blue
