A Zionsville teen has received a Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award a girl can earn in Girl Scouts. Kate Swack was honored June 1 at the Girl Scouts of Central Indiana Girls of Distinction ceremony for a project called Women in STEM.

“Receiving a Gold Award is a very big deal and I definitely felt special that the Girls Scouts of Central Indiana recognized that and congratulated us for our efforts,” said Swack, a junior at Guerin Catholic High School. “It was certainly very special to have that feeling of accomplishment walking on stage receiving the award. I knew all my hard work paid off.”

Swack’s project consisted of interviews with nine women in the STEM field about their jobs, how they became involved in their careers, the required schooling, highs and lows of their careers and how girls can position themselves to get into those fields. Swack posted the findings to her blog, Career Callings.

“The main purpose of this blog was to inform and educate girls about any type of career they could have in the STEM field. I know that sometimes it is hard to think of a job that you want to pursue, as I am going to be a junior in high school,” Swack said. “I really want to help girls around me find jobs that are interesting to them. I also posted a panel for some of the STEM women to come and be asked questions by girls my age. This was very successful as I was able to see in action my project come to fruition.”

Swack chose the STEM-related project because she knew if she was struggling to figure out a career path, other teen girls were, too.

“I really wanted to not only help others but to try to figure out a career for myself. Two career jobs that I found very interesting throughout this interviewing process were optometry and pharmacy,” she said. “After researching all these amazing careers, I also found that I might have an interest in the business side of STEM.”

Although her project is complete, Swack would like to continue to interview women in the STEM field. To read the blog, visit careercallings.wordpress.com.
