Carmel Steak ‘n Shake among several temporarily closed

A Steak ‘n Shake in Carmel is among five in the Indianapolis area to be temporarily closed.

The closures include the Carmel restaurant at 635 E. Carmel Dr. and 4105 E. 96th St. in Indianapolis, which is just across the border from Carmel. Other closures are in Indianapolis at 3810 W. Washington St., 5635 W. 38th St. and 5827 E. 71st St.

Steak ‘n Shake Senior Vice President of Marketing Judy Kadylak said the restaurants are expected to be re-opened under new franchise leadership, although she did not know when that might happen.

The restaurant chain is struggling to find enough workers, like many others on Carmel Drive and throughout the nation. Kadylak confirmed the labor shortage played a factor in the decision to temporarily close the restaurants.

“With many of these closures we were struggling with staffing and felt we were not delivering a guest experience worthy of the Steak ‘n Shake brand,” Kadylak said. “In those cases, we felt it was better to temporarily close the locations until we are confident that we can re-open under franchise ownership and deliver the best guest experience possible.”

In the meantime, the company will install new equipment at the closed locations to enhance the speed of service when they reopen, Kadylak said.

Steak ‘n Shake restaurants remain open in Hamilton County in Westfield, Noblesville and Fishers.
