Letter: College typically costs a bundle

Editor,

I read Christine Downey’s letter regarding “almost no out of pocket expenses” for college with interest. I would like to know where that was. I went to Indiana University and it cost a bundle. I worked every job on campus I could get and borrowed money that took me years to pay off. Over my objections my mother sold the house I grew up in. She never told me, but in retrospect I believe it was to give me another year at IU.

Perhaps Ms. Downey is referring to GI Bill benefits, which did come into being after World War II and as far as I know still exists. Just go talk to your local recruiter and spend a few years in service. Somehow she thinks she is entitled to my earnings to pay her way. Sorry she is not.
