Q&A: Meet the southwest district candidates

Carmel city council Incumbent Tony Green is facing a challenge from Matt Milam, a 26-year Home Place resident, in the May 7 Republican primary. They are seeking to represent the southwest district, which will look much different beginning in 2020 after redistricting takes effect.

Precinct Committeeman Orchard Park – 2008 to present, president of Concerned Citizens for Home Place, State delegate 2016, secretary of Carmel Clay Fire Board, ran for Hamilton County Commission in 2018

Why do you want to run for office?

As president of Concerned Citizens for Home Place, I learned the importance of representing diverse opinions. My council district has a variety of neighborhoods with different needs. The city council needs independent oversight rather than voting for projects and spending that the mayor wants.

What issues will your campaign focus on?

Oversight to the city council and being a voice for the constituents of the southwest district

What are your qualifications for this office?

I will bring tenacity, planning and organization skills to the city council. My experience working in the private sector in transportation for the last 15 years and having a working knowledge of meeting budgets, financial goals and managing accounts and customers to provide excellent customer service. I have a record of serving my community as precinct committeeman, neighborhood president and president of CCHP. I will commit to lead with honesty, integrity and respect.

What sets you apart from the other candidate(s) for this office?

I bring tenacity, planning and organization skills to the Carmel city council.

I will:

  • Increase transparency by making information available to the taxpayers and constituents of Carmel.
  • Increase public involvement in Carmel city government.
  • Devote my time to making Carmel a great place to live and raise a family.
  • Work with our public safety officials in Carmel to ensure a safe and desirable place to live.

What is your favorite aspect of living in Carmel?

People of Carmel, community involvement, parks, and vivic organizations that serve the public.

What is an area where Carmel can improve?

Evaluate issues for the long term benefit of the taxpayer and the city.

President – Orchard Park Neighborhood Association

What is something most people don’t know about you?

I completed three coast to coast bicycle trips with Wandering Wheels.

What is something you want people to know about you?

I will commit to lead with honesty, integrity, and respect. The people of Carmel will be my top priority.

Why do you want to run for office?

Carmel is my home. It’s the place my wife and I chose to raise our three children. I am running for office to keep the City of Carmel as the best place to live, work, raise a family and start or run a business.

What issues will your campaign focus on?

Protecting against overdevelopment, improving public safety, transitioning Home Place into the City of Carmel while protecting its unique character, maintaining infrastructure, scrutinizing fiscal spending

What sets you apart from the other candidate(s) for this office?

My ability to advocate for a position, civilly disagree with others and work with those with whom I disagree to find a better solution.

What is your favorite aspect of living in Carmel?

The high standards that the citizens have for the city and its strong sense of community.

What is an area where Carmel can improve?

The city should be able to recruit and retain enough firefighters and police officers to keep up with the growth of the city.

What is something most people don’t know about you?

I worked during the summers beginning in junior high through high school detasseling corn.

What is something you want people to know about you?

I had three direct descendants fight for the Pennsylvania militia in the Revolutionary War against the British, one of whom was at the Battle of Concord. I am following this heritage of service to community and country.
