In 2019, pizza won’t be the only popular Italian dish Carmel residents can have delivered to their homes. Sauce on the Side, a St. Louis-based, fast-casual restaurant chain specializing in calzones, will open in Carmel early next year. The restaurant will offer dine-in, carry-out and delivery.

Sauce on the Side features a menu of calzones with pre-determined fillings, or customers can choose to build their own with a range of traditional and non-traditional fillings from pepperoni to figs. Other menu items include salads, desserts and a wine and beer menu. The restaurant will include a 12-seat bar area.

According to local franchisee Mike Hammond of Westfield, his positive experiences as a Sauce on the Side customer during his travels to St. Louis inspired him to bring the concept to Indiana.

“Visiting as a customer, I just liked the total atmosphere and the product that they made. Everything is fresh,” Hammond said.

Hammond will operate the Carmel restaurant, along with a second location in downtown Indianapolis with his business partner, Kels Watson of Noblesville. The locations will  be the first Sauce on the Side restaurants to open in Indiana.

“I just thought that this is something a little different than what’s offered around here,” said Hammond, who has been in the restaurant business for 16 years. “I just thought it was fun and fresh and something that we don’t have here. Anyone can have pizza delivered, but when it comes to salads and calzones, not so much.”

Sauce on the Side will be at 12751 Pennsylvania St. in Carmel and is set to open sometime in mid-March.
