Beresford is the assistant superintendent of staff and student services at Hamilton Southeastern Schools, where he has worked for 25 years. His duties include overseeing daily operations, developing safety initiatives and talent development.

The school board announced the decision in an email sent June 1. His first day with CCS will be July 1.

“We began the search process in February and we were fortunate enough to be able to select Dr. Beresford from an impressive pool of highly qualified candidates,” the email states. “The formal hiring of the new CCS superintendent will occur after the board complies with the legally required notice and hearing process for superintendent contracts.”

Beresford began his career in education 35 years ago as a high school English and journalism teacher and has served as a school counselor, director of school counseling, assistant principal and principal before becoming an assistant superintendent. He earned a bachelor of arts from Eastern Illinois University in English and journalism, a master of science in school counseling from Butler University and his doctorate of education in educational administration from Ball State University.

“I am thrilled and honored to be a part of the CCS staff and Carmel community,” Beresford stated in a press release. “I find great fulfillment in working with teams of skilled and motivated individuals who work extremely hard to meet the academic and social-emotional needs of students. I know I am joining a group of educators that not only want to continue the excellence that is CCS, but also want to grow and improve for the students and families we serve.”

Beresford replaces Dr. Nicholas Wahl, who resigned in January after being put on administrative leave in October 2017 when the school board announced it would conduct a review of district leadership. Human resources director Corrine Middleton also resigned in January after going on administrative leave the same day as Wahl. Many speculated that the two had been involved in a romantic relationship.

The proposed contract for Beresford will be posted on the CCS website. A meeting to gather public input on the contract is set for 7:05 p.m. June 11 at the Educational Services Center, 5201 E. Main St. The school board is expected to vote on the contract at a special meeting set for 7 p.m. June 19.
