Column: Get to know the Legion

Commentary by Beth Applegate

The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veteran  organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security and continued devotion to our fellow service members and veterans.

Welcome to the first installment of a regular column about your local American Legion, Zionsville’s Post 79 at 9950 E 600 S. We’d like to introduce you to our post and let you know about services, benefits and activities available to veterans, families and the community.

We work with the veterans hospital in Indianapolis and veterans home in Lafayette in many capacities, including sponsoring veterans and providing for homeless veterans. We sponsor veterans and companions on Honor Flights, which take veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit memorials of wars in which they fought. These are just a few of the programs we sponsor, and in the coming months we will write about many of our programs and services.

We also work with our local community through Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Little League, youth football, churches and retirement homes, just to name a few. We host special events to help these groups financially.
