Children ages 4 to 8 can enjoy a day of dress-up during the third annual Princess Academy, set for 1 to 4 p.m. Nov. 4 at the Carmel High School Freshman Cafeteria. The event supports the CHS choir department.

“We started in 2015 as a fundraiser and a way to reach out to our community,” said Kathrine Kouns, director of choirs. “Here in Carmel it’s such a family-oriented community. We thought it would be a fun thing to offer to little kids.”

Students from Accents, the school’s female competition level show choir, play hostesses for the event.

“Most of the kids come dressed as their favorite prince or princess,” Kouns said. “They get registered and then they’re all assigned to a fairy godmother, and those are one of our high school girls. There are usually eight to 10 kids in each group. Their fairy godmother takes them throughout a bunch of stations throughout the day.”

Children will have their hair done, receive a manicure, have photos taken with characters in a photo booth and participate in arts and crafts.

“They will also have a story hour where they hear princess stories and have a snack,” Kouns said. “Then our girls teach them a song and dance. At the end of the day we all come back into the freshman cafeteria, and our high school girls do a performance for them. Then we invite the little kids to come up on stage with the high school girls and perform the song and dance they just learned for their parents.”

Proceeds go toward competition fees and supporting the department. Cost is $30. T-shirts are an additional $15. To register, visit carmelchoirs.org/2017-princess-academy.
