Letter: 36 percent approval rating…For what?

Editor,

In response to Mari Briggs’ July 18 letter:

I don’t recall those men (of the 1950s) groping women’s crouches, cheating on business dealings, telling constant lies, worrying daily if everyone approves of him, having nothing to do with his children until one of his several wives raises them to adulthood.

I continue to be amazed how he can have a 36 percent approval rating. For what?

According to an article by Robert Reich, professor of Public Policy at the University of California at Berkeley, Trump called Hillary Clinton a crook and then paid $25 million to settle a fraud lawsuit. He said he would divest himself from his empire to avoid any conflicts of interest yet he is still heavily involved in his businesses, and manipulates the stock market daily. He said he would release his tax returns but still refuses. He said Clinton was in the pockets of Goldman Sachs and then proceeded to put a half a dozen Goldman Sachs executives in position of power in his administration.  He said he would surround himself with the smartest people and then proceeded to fill his staff with totally unqualified people for their positions, i.e. Ben Carson a surgeon as director of HUD, and Rick Perry in charge of Department of Energy, the very department he wanted to eliminate when he was running for president who didn’t even know that nuclear weapons were under the authority of the Department of Energy.  He said he would be his own man, beholden to no one and then appointed Betsy Devos as Secretary of Education whose only “qualifications” were massive amounts of cash she donated to his campaign.

He told everyone he knew more than the generals then he gave the green light to the disastrous raid in Yemen-even though all his Generals (and he has appointed several) said it would be a terrible idea. The raid resulted in the deaths of a Navy SEAL, an 8-year-old American girl and numerous civilians. The actual target of the raid escaped, and no useful intel was gained. He didn’t even bother overseeing that raid in Yemen; instead, he spent time hate-tweeting the New York Times and sleeping.

What has he accomplished in the six months that he has been in office? He has signed 28 laws since taking office and made a “big” show out of each of them. Political scientists say it is better to measure significance than to simply add up the number of bills. Does the law change the status quo or introduce a new policy idea? It’s all a big hoax on the American people that may lose their health insurance, the middle class will pay more taxes, that none of the big promises that were made will ever come to fruition, because it seems it’s more important to this president to play golf every weekend and have a great relationship with President Putin.

It appears to me he is the joke of the world, and the only people that are benefiting from his presidency are the late-night comics. They are having a field day.
