Grade/subject/school: AP English Literature and Composition, Honors Junior English, and Junior English

Number of years teaching: 20

Background/education: Graduated from Westfield High School, B.S. in Secondary Education from State University of New York at Oswego, M.A. English from Butler University

Why did you become a teacher? “I had originally intended on being a theater major, but because of my love for reading, writing and kids, teaching high school English seemed like a natural fit. The contagious energy of my students continues to energize me every day.”

What goals do you have for your students? “I hope to instill a love of reading and learning in all of my students. I also hope to improve their writing skills so that they can express themselves with confidence, clarity and creativity.”

What do you encourage parents to do at home to help their children strengthen particular skills? I encourage them to turn off the television and have a quiet place in their home where their children can study. Putting a high priority on education from the get go is so important. Students also need to be encouraged to advocate for themselves. If they show teachers that they are trying their hardest, teachers will bend over backwards to help them succeed.”

Favorite movie: ‘“The Sound of Music’ – a classic!”

Favorite musician or band: Coldplay

What’s something your students might not know about you? “I went to Westfield High School, married my high school sweetheart, and had my principal, Dr. McGuire, as a student.”
