Column: Choosing to vote

How often do any of us get a chance to really make a difference? If you are a registered voter and reside in either the Northeast or Northwest City Council districts in Fishers, you have an opportunity to make a real difference.

When it comes election time, I often hear the same refrain from potential voters – what difference will my one vote make? Based on last year’s primary election results, your one vote can become crucial.

In last year’s Republican primary election in the Northwest City Council district, Selina Stoller was elected by defeating former Fishers Town Councilman Mike Colby by 12 votes. In the Northeast District, there were four candidates, but the winner, long-time Fishers Town Councilman Stuart Easley, defeated second-place finisher Brad DeReamer by only 25 votes. The winning margin in each case was less than 2 percent of votes cast.

Last year’s election was only for one-year terms as Fishers transitioned from a town to a city. This year’s contest is for full four-year terms.

There is a rematch from last year in the Northwest District with Selina Stoller once again facing Mike Colby. In the Northeast District, there will be two candidates instead of four, with the top two vote-getters last year, Easley and DeReamer, facing each other.

I would urge every registered Republican voter in these contested council districts to spend time evaluating those running for office. Find out which candidate is more aligned with your views.
