0

Indiana University Health Bariatric & Medical Weight Loss is co-hosting the 2011 Walk from Obesity on Sunday along with Community Health Network. The walking route will be at Fort Harrison State Park in Indianapolis. Participants can choose to walk one mile or three miles, both walks start at 1 p.m.

The Walk from Obesity is a nationwide event to raise awareness of obesity. Funds raised will go to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, a non-profit organization providing research and education initiatives to increase awareness of obesity and bariatric surgery. Funds also support the Obesity Action Coalition, a non-profit organization providing advocates for individuals affected by obesity and advocacy programs.

More than 93 million Americans are affected by obesity, and more than 15 million are affected by morbid obesity. Obesity costs our healthcare system more than $117 billion each year, and is the leading cause of preventable death. Obesity increases the likelihood of cancer, diabetes, heart disease and other medical conditions.

The Walk from Obesity will kick off with a motivational speaker, and will conclude by 4 pm. There will be vendors on sight as well. Participation is $25 if you sign up before the event, and $35 at the door.
